Holiday Travel with Family: A Few Things to Know
Private aviation can take much of the stress out of holiday travel, especially when traveling as a family. However, during the busiest weeks of the year, a little planning can make a significant difference.
1. Plan Ahead.
Holiday weekends and school breaks can compress demand into the same few hours - out Friday after class, and back Sunday evening before getting back to the office on Monday - which makes these windows some of the most heavily booked of the year. Booking early gives you greater aircraft availability and pricing.
2. Be Specific About Who - and What - is Traveling.
Passenger count is only part of the equation. Let your aviation provider know about everything coming with you: strollers, car seats, golf clubs, skis, surfboards, and oversized luggage. The right aircraft isn't simply about the number of seats; it needs to comfortably accommodate your family and everything traveling with you.
3. And Don't Forget the Four-legged Members of the Family.
One of my favorite benefits of private travel is the ability to bring family pets along. In many cases, dogs and other pets can travel right in the cabin with you, rather than being separated from the family. Advance notice allows us to confirm aircraft suitability, operator requirements, and documentation the itinerary calls for.
4. Use Flexibility to Your Advantage.
One of the greatest benefits of private travel is the ability to leverage flexibility. You're not beholden to an airline schedule, and during peak holiday periods, even small adjustments - leaving an hour earlier or returning Monday morning instead of Sunday evening - can significantly expand aircraft availability, and potentially improve pricing.
5. Consider the Airport - Not Just the Destination.
Private aviation can often give families access to airports closer to their final destination. Around the holidays, choosing the right airport can mean less time in the car, fewer crowds, and more time where you want to be.
6. Think About the Entire Trip.
Share catering requests, including food preferences or allergies, children's needs, ground transportation requirements, and any special requests in advance. If you're traveling internationally, make sure passports and any required documentation for children or pets are addressed early on.
Ultimately, the value of flying privately during the holidays is the freedom it creates. You can travel on your schedule, bring what your family needs (including the family pet), choose food that works for everyone, and avoid many of the restrictions and friction that come with commercial travel. The holidays are about spending time together. The travel should make that easier.
